Progress. 🤛
I’ve lost count of the hours we’ve spent working on this staircase, but it has all been worth it.
I’m so proud of how much we have managed to do ourselves - from the early stages removing hundreds of staples left behind once the carpet had been ripped off, to filling and restoring the cornicing or stripping and sanding back 15 layers of paint on the spindles (before repainting them all - BY HAND). But finally, finally, we’ve got to this. 💛
The carpet runner won’t be laid until a few other bits in the house have been completed but we’re very very nearly there... 🙌✨

26/52 spindles have now had primer, an undercoat and a coat of gloss 🙌 The end is in sight!! People tend to laugh when we explain just how much work we’ve put into the staircase and banister. But when we first started, there were about 15 coats of paint (most peeling and yellowing) resulting in a loss of the detail you can see today. These are all original and we thought they deserved to be restored to their former glory. Sadly though we don’t have an endless supply of money so we‘ve done all the paint stripping, sanding and painting. We’ve been through 3 heat guns & what feels like hundreds of metres of sandpaper. At different times, it’s been both a labour of love and a complete pain - but we couldn’t be more proud of how it looks now. Our hallway is almost on the final straight 🙌💛

Here’s what we’re dreaming of for our hallway... We’ve been head-down the last few weeks painting the wainscot panelling and oiling the handrail. Next it’s painting the walls and spindles and I’m so excited 🙌😁 Can’t wait to share some more pics of the progress we’re making 💫 .

Sometimes the little details can make all the difference... We’re fixing and painting all the original doors in the property to keep as much of the Victorian charm as possible. These little doorknobs are perfect to give a nod back to the age of the property, while keeping a modern twist. .

What is it that makes your house feel like a home?
We’ve got plenty of dogs in the family and can’t wait to get one of our own eventually, but our lives right now (and the state of the house) wouldn’t make for a happy dog. Instead we have to make do with the occasional bit of dog-sitting or fly-by visits like this - but that just makes them all the sweeter 🐶
